As industrial-grade terminal devices, rugged computers are expected to deliver outstanding reliability and durability. Beyond withstanding extreme environments, they must resist everyday mechanical wear on components such as buttons, ports, and hinges.
Will a button fail after a few days?
Will ports become loose after repeated use?
Will hinges become unstable over time?
To answer these questions, ONERugged operates an Extreme Durability Lab where devices undergo five mechanical and physical durability tests that simulate over five years of real-world usage. These tests ensure every ONERugged device provides durable, dependable performance for industrial users.
1. Button Durability Test — 10,000 Presses
This test simulates routine button usage by applying 700g of force with a button life tester. Each physical button is pressed 10,000 times while the device remains powered on. After the test, buttons are inspected for surface wear, cracks, and functional degradation.
Result: No visible wear or loss of sensitivity was detected. This equates to pressing a button five times per day for over five years without failure.
2. Keyboard Durability Test — 1,000,000 Keystrokes
The keyboard is a critical human–computer interface. Using a keystroke tester, ONERugged rugged laptops are subjected to 1,000,000 keystrokes at a consistent 150g force over a multi-day run. After testing, the keyboard’s sensitivity and responsiveness are verified with professional software.
Result: All indicators remained within normal operating parameters. At an average of 547 keystrokes per day, the keyboard durability corresponds to roughly 5+ years of use.
3. Hinge Durability Test — 20,000 Open/Close Cycles
Hinges are essential for rugged laptop reliability. The hinge durability test performs repeated 180° open/close cycles. Each device is cycled 20,000 times, with inspections every 5,000 cycles to check for looseness, stiffness, or damage.
Result: No structural or functional abnormalities were observed. With 10 opens per day, the hinge lifespan easily exceeds five years.
4. Port Insertion Test — 5,000 Plug/Unplug Cycles
Ports (USB, DC, HDMI, SIM, TF) undergo frequent insertion and removal in daily operation. Using an automatic insertion tester, ONERugged performs 5,000 plug/unplug cycles for each interface and card slot, then verifies connection and recognition performance.
Result: All ports and card slots continued to function normally with no recognition failures. At an average of up to 3 plug/unplug actions per day, ports remain reliable for at least five years.
5. Structural Pressure Test — 9 Points on Screen & Back Cover
To simulate pressure scenarios such as bag compression or impacts, ONERugged uses a 10mm flat press head to apply 5 kgf vertically to 9 points across the screen and back cover, each point tested 10 times.
Result: No deformation or functional damage was found. This test verifies the device’s resilience against accidental pressure and collisions during transport.
Conclusion
Quality is never just a slogan — reliability is the highest value. ONERugged’s rigorous mechanical and physical durability tests demonstrate that its rugged laptops and tablets meet and exceed industry standards. Under normal use, users can expect long-term reliability of five years or more without worrying about failures in buttons, ports, or hinges.
