ONErugged’s Extreme Testing Ground: Episode 4 – Waterproof and Dustproof Tests

Waterproof, drop-resistant, and durable — these are the core advantages of ONERugged rugged computers. In previous “Extreme Trial” tests, ONERugged devices successfully passed drop, high/low temperature, and durability challenges, demonstrating outstanding reliability. This time, we put their waterproof and dustproof performance to the test.

To evaluate these capabilities, the IP rating is the most important benchmark. Commonly used in industrial and outdoor rugged devices, the IP standard ensures equipment can maintain stable performance under extreme conditions. The IP rating consists of two digits: the first represents dust protection, and the second represents water resistance. For example, IP65, IP67, and IP68 are among the most common. The “6” indicates complete dustproof protection; “5” means resistance to low-pressure water jets; “7” and “8” indicate immersion resistance under different depths of water.

ONErugged waterproof and dustproof rating

All ONERugged rugged computers and outdoor devices (tablets, handhelds, smartphones) are certified to IP65 or higher. This means that from daily splashes and short immersions to accidental drops in water, ONERugged devices can continue running stably without damage. In this test, we visited ONERugged’s laboratory to examine the sealing structure and validate IP65 + IP68 performance through real experiments.

1. IP6X Dustproof Test

Test Standard:IEC 60529:1989+A1:1999+A2:2013+COR1:2019

Test Conditions

  • Temperature: 15℃~35℃
  • Humidity: 25%~75%
  • Dust chamber with talcum powder concentration: 2kg/m³
  • Negative pressure maintained ≤2kPa
  • Airflow rate:<40x housing volume/hour
  • Duration: 8 hours

During the test, a rugged laptop was placed inside the dust chamber under continuous talcum powder exposure. After 8 hours, the device showed no visible dust intrusion and continued functioning normally. This proves ONERugged computers can withstand harsh dusty environments such as construction sites and deserts.

2. IPX5 Low-Pressure Water Jet Test

Test Standard:IEC 60529:1989+A1:1999+A2:2013+COR1:2019

Test Conditions

  • Temperature: 15℃~35℃
  • Humidity: 25%~75%
  • Nozzle diameter: 6.3mm
  • Water flow: 12.5L/min
  • Distance: 2.5m~3m
  • Duration: 3 minutes

Pressure Water Jet Test

A rugged tablet was exposed to 360° water jet spraying at 12.5L/min for 3 minutes. After testing, the device showed no leakage and functioned normally, proving its resistance to rain, splashes, and water spray.

3. IPX8 Submersion Test

Test Standard:IEC 60529:1989+A1:1999+A2:2013

Test Conditions

  • Temperature: 15℃~35℃
  • Humidity: 25%~75%
  • Water depth: 1.5 meters
  • Duration: 30 minutes

Submersion Test

ONERugged’s rugged smartphone was submerged in water at a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. After removal, the device remained fully functional, demonstrating IP68-grade water resistance suitable for extreme environments.

4. ONERugged’s IP65 + IP68 Technology

How does ONERugged achieve such outstanding sealing and water resistance? Two main approaches are used:

  • Physical Sealing: Rubber or silicone gaskets at housing joints, ports, and battery modules block water intrusion.
  • Protective Coatings: Waterproof adhesives and coatings applied to buttons, scanners, and speaker membranes provide additional protection. Special waterproof foams and films ensure long-lasting durability.

Together, these methods allow ONERugged devices to meet or exceed IP67 and IP68 protection standards.

Conclusion

Through rigorous laboratory testing, ONERugged rugged computers successfully achieved IP65 + IP68 certification. For professionals in outdoor, industrial, and extreme environments, this means reliable operation under rain, splashes, immersion, or accidental water exposure. ONERugged continues to deliver rugged devices that serve as the most reliable partner in demanding conditions.
